ABSTRACT:

The regeneration of tonality from the ashes of the avant-garde is perhaps one of the most remarkable phenomena in the music at the end of a century that for a long time upheld compositional innovation and experimentation as a priori virtues. Only recently, more precisely in the 1970's, have these approaches been subjected to increased questioning by European and American composers alike; it is nowadays unlikely that a document espousing an imperturbable belief in the God-given nature of tonality will be tossed aside as a confession of an inflexible conservative. Exactly this view, however, had been the prevalent reaction to voices like Schwarz-Schilling's for many decades of the twentieth century.
